It is less than an hour’s drive north of Jacksonville to Trenton, North Carolina. The small Jones County town has a population of less than 300; a figure that was tragically reduced by two in a recent head-on collision on Highway 258.
A young mother and her toddler were killed in the violent crash when a dump truck crossed the center line and smashed into their Honda Accord.
North Carolina Highway Patrol officers responded to a call about the wreck around nine on Monday morning. The troopers said passing motorists stopped and tried to help the mother and child, but the two did not survive their catastrophic injuries sustained in the crash.
A Highway Patrol officer said a bystander gave the child CPR, but the effort was to no avail. The woman and her child were both pronounced dead at the scene of the head-on crash.
Officials have not released the names of the crash victims.
Law enforcement officials said they do not yet know why the dump truck crossed the center line and hit the much smaller Honda.
The dump truck driver was hospitalized with injuries not considered life-threatening, a news report stated. He has apparently been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
We do not know why the truck driver crossed the lane, but we do know that drivers in similar wrecks have been distracted or impaired. Far too often, people are paying attention to their phones rather than traffic or the road. We all know as well that drunk and drugged drivers pose tremendous dangers to themselves and other motorists.
